You have a multitude of options for controlling how rhub messages you. Because everyone uses rhub differently, and groups have different messaging characteristics, there's no "one size fits all" approach, so we give you the tools so you can customise it to your liking.
In most cases, this discussion is about messages being forwarded (or 'dispatched') to you. This is where a message gets sent to your phone, email or instant messaging account.
If you are generally pretty happy with your forwarded messages, but one group is a little too 'active' for your tastes, you can use message filtering, which is set on a per-group basis (settable here).
Rhub has a few preset filters you can choose or if you are feeling adventurous you can set up your own. Filtering works by examining what words are present in messages and comparing it with the filter you've set.
Message Forward settings (settable here) allow you to only receive certain types of messages. For example, you can turn off group forwards completely, yet still receive personally-addressed messages.
If you prefer not to get messages on your phone, or would like to change the order of mediums, you'll want to look at your Notification Settings (settable here).
You can use 'message silencing' to temporarily put a stop on all incoming rhub messages. For example, you can set a silence for a period of two days while you're on a surfing weekend. Rhub automatically starts resumes your messages (although you won't receive the backlog) when the silence expires, or you can cancel it manually.
If you wish to turn off messaging for an extended period of time, yet still make use of the website when you want, turn on Vacation Mode. The added benefit of vacation mode is that other users will be able to see that you've got it turned on, and can take it into account when messaging you.
