Your presence message is some arbitrary text you can set. You can use it for whatever purpose you want.
Your presence information will be shown where your name appears on rhub using the gem icon. It will also be available on the presence page.
By default only your friends will be able to see your presence message. If you visit your privacy settings page, you can make your presence viewable by no-one, all contacts, or everyone.
When setting your presence message via the web (http://rhub.net/presence.php) you can specify how long the message should hang around for. This is so you don't have to go back later and unset a no-longer relevant message - rhub will take care of it for you.
You can also set your presence message via the console:
@=[message]
e.g., to tell people you busy with uni:
@=Snowed under with uni work
e.g., to set that you are rocking out to a new album:
@=Rockin' out to OK Computer
Hint: Set your Jabber status message to the same message as above, and your rhub presence will be set automatically! You must have already set up your Profile with your Jabber/GTalk account and added 'jabber@rhub.net' to your roster. Read more.
You might sometimes want to notify people you've set a message, and of course what the message is.
With console, you simply have to add '>' on to the end of the message. This "send-to" prefix is the same you use for other messaging commands. As an example, the following command will set your presence message and will forward it:
@=Had a nasty skiing accident, will be AWOL for a while>
On the web you just tick the "Notify others" checkbox.
Who receives your notifications? Great question. Any person may chose which (if any) notifications they receive from others in their settings. For example you can opt to only receive notifications from friends. Additionally your message will only be forwarded to people you've allowed to see your presence information. So if you've allowed contacts to see your presence, and Bob is a mutal contact, and Bob has allowed presence change notifications from contacts, Bob will receive your notification. Simple, eh?
Rhub only forwards presence messages via the web (in the little purple pop-up boxes) and IM (MSN/Jabber/GTalk). If you want to forward another way, perhaps you should use an IM.
